Do You Think Smoking Marijuana Every Evening For Years Will Negatively Affects Ones Life Over Time?

Are there any mental effects, other than short-term memory loss, with habitual marijuana smoking over a number of years? And why would someone choose to smoke every single day, without the intention of ever quitting? Is that a sign there’s a problem of some kind?

A lot of people say smoking weed is okay because it’s not addictive. However, anything can be psychologically addictive even if it’s not physically addictive.
Also, marijuana, in addition to harming lung and mouth health (hello, it’s SMOKING!!), causes Amotivational Syndrome in many people. This means that many weed heads end up just sitting on couches, unable or unwilling to do productive things. Over time, this unwillingness to do productive things becomes ingrained in people and they become somewhat worthless.

You can become addicted to anything. This *could* be an addiction – although would you be as bothered if it was a glass of wine every night? (Well, some people would be. People may view different addictions slightly differently).
Long term effects, from after stopping – really only short term memory loss as you mentions and possibly blue-yellow colourblindness. This second is relatively rare but true. You can loose/reduce your blue cones. But this can also happen to diabetics. There isn’t any conclusive evidence of long term intellectual impairment.
EDIT: The psychosis link mentioned above: Actually if he has one or two pairs of val COMT genes on chromosone 22q11… So, basically, with a genetic predisposition, then he has a higher chance of developing schizophrenia. But there is no effect if he has met COMT genes… and even with them the effect is *modest* and nowhere near 80% – that was a bit of a myth. The effect is not that strong at all.

I hope it doesn’t affect me.
I like to smoke a lot of pot because it makes me happy. I don’t know why everyone is so against it to the extent that I sometimes see, it’s ridiculous. Pot is by far the safest drug to do(being virtually impossible to overdose) and it’s near legal. I’m not ashamed to say that I like to smoke pot pretty much every day, it keeps me calm and relaxed and I like that. It doesn’t affect my life negatively in any way. I don’t ever plan on quitting, but if the time comes, so be it. People choose to smoke it every day because it’s a way of life, it’s the same as you having a glass of red wine every day; it’s relaxing and happy.

Over several years, those “short term” effects turn into long term effects. Even short term memory loss ruins relationships and causes people to lose their jobs and credibility. And yes, having no intention of quitting does speak to a much larger issue. Eventually, the “evening” smoking may turn into day time smoking which could endanger others if this person drives. Also, many heavy substance abusers began with marijuana and using even stronger, more deadly substances.

To be perfectly honest, there hasn’t been much research on marijuana because the federal government won’t allow it, and the bare minimum research that HAS been done has been done using very low grade marijuana.
The actual act of smoking, (i.e. burning weed/paper) isn’t very good for you, but there are other ways to medicate without resorting to “smoking”.
Medical Marijuana is legal in several states, most people who smoke medically have no intension of quitting, so long as their aliment exists. For them, marijuana isn’t the problem, but the solution.

Physically, no. Mentally, helllll yeah. I smoked everyday all day all summer and im so pissedd thinking about it. I wasted so much time and i lost my personality. everrrything me and my friends did was finding weed, smoking it, selling it or trying to find some. You dont realize it when your doing it, but MODERATION, unless you have no reason to not smoke all the time, like if your laoded and dont ever have to get a job :]

Some people find it addictive. Others just like it a lot. Why do many people drink alcohol every day? It’s certainly impairing (as is use of alcohol), but the degree of impairment varies widely depending on the person — I’ve known potheads with six figure incomes and potheads who could scarcely tie their shoes.

Sure, too much of anything is not a good thing. I knew this one guy who smoked it every day and before long he was forgetting everything, took him forever to answer a question, basically turned stupid over the years, got fired for showing up late and failing the piss test. Now he sweeps floors somewhere for dope money.

No. NOT being able to smoke marijuana every evening negatively affects my life. Anyone who watches the nightly news can attest to this too – it’s like ‘they’ work to keep us depressed – successfully I might add.
